About Personal Training

What is Personal Training?
Personal Training (PT) is a One-To-One Service provided by a Gym Personal Trainer. The Personal Trainer will discuss with the client what are his fitness goals and the time frame to reach the goal. A tailor-made program will be planned and the sessions will be conducted in the gym according to the program. Personal Training is still something quite new to Singapore. It was unheard of in Singapore until 1996 when Ray Wilson California gym was opened in Orchard Road. Since then, PT gained popularity and never looked back.

Why Personal Training?
PT is such a popular service in spite of its high cost $$$, because it gives you results. Having a Personal Trainer to coach you 1-to-1 means more focus and attention. Your Personal Trainer is able to understand your strength, weaknesses, as well as your limitations. He/ she will plan a programme that is targeted on your fitness goals, one step at a time. Making appointment with a Personal Trainer also means that someone will always be there to monitor your progress, motivates you, and correct your training technique, so you won't sustain any serious injuries. You will also become more consistent in attending your training sessions, as you have paid for it.

How did I become a Personal Trainer?
When I was young, I never thought that I would become a Personal Trainer, because this occupation was unheard of at that time. My aspiration when I was young was becoming a full time sportsman, either a badminton player or a soccer player. Other than sports, I also thought of becoming a scientist or engineer. But one thing for sure, its that I always wanted to have a fit looking body. I would read up on Fitness magazines and go for gym sessions. Through discipine and hardwork, I was able to build up to a fit looking athletic body. This help me to gain better self-confidence and I thought maybe I can help people this way too. That was what led me to becoming a Personal Trainer. To help people through good health and fitness.

How to find a good Personal Trainer?

The road to finally becoming a Personal Trainer is very tough. People are still dubious about Personal Trainers because this is still a very new industry. There are no governing bodies to issue license or to punish errant Trainers. There are no Best Practices or ethical standards governing Trainers. Clients practically hire trainers at their own risk, therefore they should be wary of Trainers who took their certifications online without any practical trainings or internship, or worse still, without any certifications to prove their professional knowledge.

A good personal trainer will go through great length to improve themselves constantly through certifications, workshops, seminars and courses regularly with recognized Institutions. Some recognized private Fitness associations are such as ACSM, FISAF, NSCA, ACE or even local FIC from Singapore Sports Council.
